ABM Industries Helps FBI Building Achieve First-Ever Top Rating for Sustainability from U.S. Green Building Council

NEW YORK, Mar 04, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- ABM Engineering Services, working in concert with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and USAA Real Estate Company (USAA), played a key role in helping the FBI's Regional Facility in Chicago secure the world's first top-tier or Platinum rating from the United States Green Building Council's (USGBC) LEED(R) EBOM program. ABM Engineering Services is a subsidiary of ABM Industries Incorporated (NYSE: ABM), one of the United States' leading facility services contractors.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, a sustainability program and rating system developed by USGBC to help building owners and operators measure and meet established standards for their buildings' operations, improvements and maintenance. The goal is to maximize a building's operational efficiency while minimizing its impact on the environment.

LEED EBOM (Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance) is USGBC's rating system for existing buildings, as it focuses on operations versus new construction. USGBC also has LEED rating systems for new construction, schools and other categories.

Achieving the Platinum Rating

ABM Engineering Services in concert with USAA developed the detailed plans required by USGBC for the FBI facility to receive a LEED EBOM Platinum rating - including a commissioning plan, operational sequence optimization, test procedures and calibration plans.

"ABM's engineering and maintenance team played a critical role in the design, development and implementation of the LEED EBOM Platinum submission to USGBC, working closely with USAA's director of facilities and executive leadership team," said Steven Zaccagnini, executive vice president, ABM Industries. "This was a great team effort and demonstrates the strong partnership between ABM and USAA, as well as the cooperation and desire on the part of the FBI for achieving the top rating."

Brenna Walraven, USAA Real Estate Company, said: "ABM was an integral part of the FBI Regional office achieving the LEED EBOM Platinum certification and has been a valued partner in developing our national LEED efforts as part of our USGBC LEED Portfolio Program pilot participant efforts. As important for us was that they understood our commitment to executing the business case whereby we achieved LEED Platinum while coming in under budget."

Mike Latham, President, ABM Engineering Services, noted: "ABM is in the process of helping a number of other companies achieve LEED ratings, energy reduction, and sustainability goals for their properties throughout the country. To that end, we currently employ LEED AP certified employees strategically placed around the country to support our clients' sustainability objectives. We are committed to taking a proactive part in preserving the environment through eco-friendly, efficient properties."
